Does My Vote Matter? Is the Electoral College Hurting or Helping America?

Monday, September 12, 2016
(Original presentation date)

Many Americans consider the Constitution outdated, perhaps even irrelevant in our modern times. Rather than pursue the rigorous process of amending the Constitution to keep it current with changing conditions, opponents of the “Founders’ Constitution” have used the courts and popular referenda to bring about their desired social changes. A similar project is underway to replace the current constitutional process of electing the President, commonly called the Electoral College, with a direct popular vote. Proponents of this plan see a way to accomplish this change without Constitutional amendment.

Mr. Porter will review the various proposals for choosing a President that the Framers considered and debated before settling on the one described in the Constitution, and how that process has been undermined by the emergence and influence of political parties. Can, or even should, the Electoral College be saved?

Gary Porter is Executive Director of the Constitution Leadership Initiative, a program to promote a better understanding of the U.S. Constitution among the American people, and a volunteer docent at The Foundation for American Christian Education.
