Dr. Mark Beliles will present:

Doubting Thomas?

The Religious Life and Legacy of Thomas Jefferson

On Thursday, October 30th  6:30-8:30 p.m.

Dr. Beliles will present research from his recently published book on the topic, drawing on over 1,000 letters and papers of Jefferson that touch on religion, of which about a hundred were printed by Beliles for the first time. The evidence suggests that Jefferson seemed to go through five different phases of belief, tracking closely with the unique religious trends of Central Virginia that featured both independent evangelicalism and theological confusion. Jefferson’s relationship with over 200 clergy and religious groups and previously unpublished quotes, donations and actions reveal new, surprising and nuanced viewpoints about Christianity and church/state policies that should modify some of the prevailing views of Jefferson.

Mark A. Beliles is the Founder of the Providence Foundation and presently leads the America Transformation Company and the Global Transformation Network. He has spoken across the United States and in over 40 countries. Beliles has also served as a senior pastor for 36 years and presently gives apostolic oversight for several churches and networks. Besides popular books such as America’s Providential History, and Contending for the Constitution, Beliles also is co-author of several scholarly woks such as: Doubting Thomas?-The Religious Life and Legacy of Thomas Jefferson, and The Selected Religious Letters and Papers of Thomas Jefferson. He has organized several scholarly symposiums at the University of Virginia, and served as chairman of the Historic Resources Committee of the city of Charlottesville and co-chairman of its recent 250th anniversary. He earned his Ph.D. from Whitefield Theological Seminary.
