Lessons in Liberty

Dr. Gai Ferdon
The Welfare State $20 Trillion Later

Four evenings, June 20–23, 7:00–9:00 p.m. EDT
In our Chesapeake, Virginia classroom and live online

Romans 13 delineates the role of government as a “punisher of evildoers.” Our founders understood this and strictly limited the powers of the federal government as they drafted the Constitution. They did not see government as a “provider” but knew God designed us to provide for ourselves (II Thessalonians 3:10). They also knew, based on I Timothy 5, that the “safety net” was the family, and for those with no living relatives or family capable of assisting, it was the church.

Topics to be discussed include: the US constitutional order and system, the rise of entitlements and the welfare state; the principle of private property, and the proper role of each jurisdiction (individual, family, church, voluntary associations, civil government) in the area of welfare.

Dr. Gai Ferdon holds a Ph.D. in early modern British political thought from the University of Leicester, United Kingdom. Her work was undertaken at Tyndale House, an evangelical Biblical studies library in Cambridge. Dr. Ferdon also holds a Master of Arts degree in Government and Public Policy from Regent University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Political Science from Indiana Wesleyan University. Dr. Ferdon is an associate professor with the Helms School of Government at Liberty University. Gai is the author of A Republic, If You can Keep It, available in paperback and as a PDF download from the FACE Bookstore.
